Astrology: Full Moon in Aries October 1, 2020

Paolo Veronese, ‘Mars and Venus United by Love’, oil on canvas, Italy, 1570s

The first Full Moon of October 2020 takes place on October 1, at 17:05 EDT, 21:05 UT, and the vibe at this time strongly speaks of our need to look selfishly, uninterruptedly and energetically at our emotional state – collective and individual. Matters of healing in society, fraternity, our ideals of civic duty and organization are juxtaposed against our ideas of joy and how we realize our creative legacies (including those we leave our children).

The chart ruler for this October 1 event is The Moon herself, and she is in a tight embrace with Chiron, both isolated in their conjunction and opposition to the Sun. The Sun’s light, buried below the horizon, while wanting to express itself creatively and with the refinement of Libra, must take into consideration how aggression and insensitivity function in positioning against natural urges for joy, fulfillment and self-realization. Do we grab what we want, and keep it for ourselves, because we can, and it makes us feel good – or would we feel happier reaching out and sharing? Does sharing make us feel weak? Is the idea of weakness a fallacy or a reality, and where do we find a working neutral zone in defining strength vs weakness? The Sun in Libra wants peace, refinement, gentility and diplomacy, and is willing to shine its light upon a globally needy Full Moon in Aries, demanding and pushing for nurturing, the perpetually hungry beast that bites the hand that feeds. The Sun’s light exposes these innermost processes in the Full Moon configuration, allowing us the opportunity to find understanding and acceptance of this messiness, from which healing and progress can occur.

Aries wants always to feel first, best, and preeminent, and has very little patience or need for considering the feelings of others. Moon in Aries has the capacity to be quite self-contained, even if it arrives there by alienating everyone in their personal milieu. This Moon can be brash, is not particularly sensitive, is generally demanding and at times selfish, feeling most actualized in the midst of a fight, and most secure when someone is on the other side acquiescing, and conceding. Aries is the ultimate prize-fighter, and the prizes are won after taking more hits, going more rounds, and knocking down more opponents than the other guy. The nature of Aries is to hit first, talk later, and that approach to life makes for many adversaries, and if perpetuated, fewer sympathetic ears, and more closed doors.

But what damage results from that sort of combativeness? That suffering and pain require consideration, for any trauma cannot be sustained indefinitely. This Full Moon, tied as it is with Chiron, allows the opportunity for examination and understanding of how we push ourselves forward emotionally, and how being selfish and demanding, and forcing our needs and wants ahead of others may actually undermine our ultimate security – individually and societally. Conjoined as it is with Chiron, that energy, while thrilling and stimulating, is now irritatingly suffused with guilt, shame and a brooding sense of weakness and self-undoing, a feeling that we are engaged in a continually repeated power play that goes wrong, like a fist that reaches out for contact and meets with thin air. This is not comfortable energy, and when we have always assumed that conquering and feeling dominant are assured means of achieving personal security and comfort, we are now confronted with a failure of that old system to achieve its regularly scheduled emotional fix. Aggression as a modus operandi is no longer working. The worm has turned, and it is growing increasingly obvious that we need to find a new way forward.

Franz von Stuck, ‘Wounded Centaur’, bronze, Germany, 1890.

The cluster of planets in Capricorn – Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto – continues to crouch and send out wide and disconcerting waves of deep-seated, unsettling yet ultimately empowering and constructive energy. It’s like surfing – the waves are there, some are weak, some are tight, some you miss and some you catch. That stellium offers tremendous opportunity for total transformation – but before you can achieve that sort of energetic shift, you had better have some idea of which wave to catch, and your ultimate destination, or else you will just be bowled over and floundering for solid ground. None of those planets suffer fools gladly; Jupiter can give you the world, but you might become a boring, bloated and over-stuffed blob on your way to your ultimate achievements. Saturn can offer discipline, structure and perfection, but you have to look your fears squarely in the face before you even approach that altar. Pluto can utterly and unrecognizably transform you, and bring you into alignment with your soul purpose, but the courage and stomach required for that katabasis will be the most profound energy expenditure of your life.

Smash all that up against cocky Mars in Aries, pushing and goading from the social and fraternal 11th house, and you have a hot mess of suppressed ambitions, leaky testosterone, and wild speculations. Throw in an opposition from Mercury in Scorpio, chomping at the bit in wanting to subvert and achieve, butting up against stocky and impassable Uranus in Taurus and you have a highly unpredictable stew of perverse outbursts, surprising realizations, zingers and cheap shots that can’t be taken back, but instead fester and bubble in the subconscious, potentially tipping to destabilization and chaos. Mars in Aries, waiting for the Moon to catch up by the weekend, will provoke and instigate, so brace yourselves for a tense and contentious first few days of October.

This is not a time to expect that someone will hold your hand, give you a warm cup of comfort and bemoan the injustices of the world with you – more likely, you will be goaded into an argument or a flat-out fight. No worries – just stay centered, and don’t allow yourself to be pushed off your spot, no matter how deep provocations might hit. This too shall pass, so stay positive and hold on tight – it’s going to be a bumpy ride as we move deeper towards the culmination of this year. (Note: we have another Full Moon in October, on the 31st – a Blue Moon – but that’s another story!)

Cardinal signs – Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn – You continue to groan and strain, pushing and pulling us all forward into a seemingly preferable but as yet undefined future. There is an assumed, strangely compelling belief that “things will be better, if only we can get through this”, an equivalency between experiencing difficulty and pain with virtue and achievement. This is a prime opportunity to consider how you continue chewing the fat of your suffering, and how that affects your self-image, your partnerships, your creative self-expression and your place in society. Perhaps it’s all been a bit too-too much? Take stock and adjust – you now have the ability to cut away that fat and tighten up.

Fixed signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius – You will feel alternating flashes of inspiration, super-cool ideas and stream of consciousness mixed with impatience, a proclivity to snapping and butting in, and an itching cantankerousness that will find delight in arguments, and extended debate. Insightful reading or viewing could lead to far-flung stretches of imagination. Watch out for impulse shopping and pushing people (and yourself!) too hard. Dreams could be unusual, and you may feel a bit tired and under the weather.

Mutable signs – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces – You may find that your innermost selves are suddenly out there at large for consideration and debate, and this could lead to feeling somewhat overdrawn, shy or overexposed. Rapidly changing conversational topics, fleeting subconscious images, and following your gut feel unsettling but strangely good. Go with the flow, and don’t be afraid to share. We are all in this together, and your example could prove inspiring and educational to someone when you least expect it.

Thank you for reading, and be well everyone! Veronica 💫

Astrology: Sun Ingress to Libra 2020

Venus of Capua, Roman, AD 117 – 138

The Sun moves into Libra on September 22 at 9:31 EDT, 14:31 UT, bringing in the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (Vernal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere). Venus-ruled Libra is frequently regarded as a softie, pleasure-loving, aesthetic, indecisive and prone to vacillation, but is also capable of exceptional executive ability, having the power to truly work with people, team-building and leading with a sense of justice, seeking peace and betterment for all. The reason for this common stereotype, depicting Libra as an aesthete push-over, is that the Sun is at its Fall in Libra, which is not a comfortable position for the Sun to be in, as basic solar energies naturally want to express the personal will, ego and authority as strongly as possible, and this sense of raw force is at odds with the Libra approach to life. In Libra, the Ego feels it is necessary to look outside at its surrounding society, comparing and absorbing influences from “the other” in order to find any true sense of Self, constantly requiring the reflectivity and mirroring that comes with interaction and relationships. There is a constant urge to “check in” with others, to interact, get feedback, acknowledgement, gratitude and consideration. Venus-ruled Libra needs relationship and rapport in order to understand who and what they are, and it is this Venusian urge to creating society which allows humanity to be civilized, orderly and refined; these energies are highly valuable for the service they do for society as a whole, so before you second guess your Libra friends and loved ones, think again what life would be like without their refining influences.

With the capacity, indeed the necessity to truly see both sides of a situation, and with the cool clarity that the Air element can bring, Libra is capable of achieving great understanding, though the preference will always be to see that achievement through with a sense of fine precision and delicate control. Libra shuns any overt displays of gross emotionality, preferring things to be light, refined and pleasant, and will approach any unpleasantness, or conflict situations with a tendency to chilliness, quickly cutting away any excessive or potentially embarrassing ramifications – even if that occasionally means simply leaving someone else holding the bag, preferring to check in later, and if necessary, smooth over any ruffled feathers, gently reasserting pleasant control and decorum.

Saturn is Exalted in Libra, for the disciplined, ascetic and limiting energies of Saturn find perfection in the Venus-ruled sign. If we consider the heights of architecture and art, the finest expressions of humanity achieved through peace-making and diplomacy, and the crafting of sentiment, theoretical inquiry and philosophy through the discipline of the written word in literature and the sciences, it is easy to see how Saturn could find its expression perfected in the balance of reason and aesthetics.

Some deities associated with Libra are Aphrodite, goddess of Love, Maat, goddess of cosmic order and Justice, Vulcan, god of metalworking, fire and traditionally the husband of Aphrodite, as well as Yama, god of Death and Dharma, lord and judge of the underworld. Plant associations include apples, wheat, white flowers, tobacco and mint. Some famous Libra celebrities include Mahatma Gandhi, Vladimir Putin, Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter, Sting, Anne Rice, Matt Damon, Desmond Tutu, Pierre Trudeau and Lee Harvey Oswald.

Yama, Tibet, 17th century

For this coming year, Libra is on a quest for knowledge. The sense of Self is empowered and philosophical, simultaneously seeking adventure and structure, reaching for a newly evolving sense of gravitas. A year to watch out for potentially caustic communication, emotional escapism and a tendency for a highly (over) energized home front. Either renovations or arguments (or both!) could rock the languid Libra boat. Beware of pushing too hard. Dreams are hidden and inspired, partnerships are fruitful and educational.

Yoga: Three Bodies, Three Gunas

Shiva as Nataraja, Lord of the Dance, encompassing both the creation and destruction of the world. His rhythm and fire burn away the dross that conceals true reality. Chola Dynasty Bronze, Tamil Nadu, India. 950-1000 CE.

Patanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, defined a precise methodology for psychological self-development that if followed astutely, would lead the seeker to a state of release, or moksha, freedom from the constraints of this world. This path, known as Raja Yoga, is an eight-fold approach, and involves the following elements: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, loosely translated as personal self-cultivation, various observance of lifestyle rules, achieving stability in bodily posture, breath control, sense withdrawal, concentration and withdrawal of the mind, diffusion of personal Ego, and finally merger of self with Self, and complete release from the strictures of earthly entrapment.

Yoga ideology defines our earthly existence as being composed of three levels of experience.  While most people understand their consciousness and identity in terms of the physical body, in actuality, we have not one, but three bodies, or layers to our individual existence, once we take birth.  These three layers are what define our reality. These three bodies are considered as the physical, subtle and causal bodies, or the sthula sharira, the sukshma sharira and the karana sharira.  We are an interconnection of energetic functioning, and these three bodies operate in tandem, as well as separately from one another.  While we have a conscious understanding of our physical body, a conscious apprehension of our subtle and causal bodies is often more difficult to gain, until we begin to look at existence in a broader perspective.

Working in tandem with the three bodies of human existence are three basic levels of energetic frequency or vibration, which animate everything we see in existence.  It is understood that this phenomenal world is activated and informed by these three energy frequencies, which can be defined as sattwa, rajas, and tamas.  Sattwa is a peaceful, fine and even energy.  It is the creative force, and it unifies and connects.  It is the beauty of a flower, the evenness of our breathing, and the sense of calm, steady energy that is health and well-being.  Rajas is energetic, volatile, active and moving.  It is like fire and lightening, digestion and aggression, it is the energy that pushes things and impels us to create change and activity in our lives.  Tamas is receding, collapsing, stagnation, dormancy, and passing away. It is the period of decay and lassitude, it is like the mud in the pond that sits and stews, slow and dull.

Everything that we see, experience, touch, feel or know is comprised of these three energies of sattwa, rajas and tamas, and it is very rare to find anything that expresses only one of these qualities exclusively.  Prakriti, or creation, expresses herself uniformly and always using the combination of these three qualities.  Sattwa can be found in times of harmony, rajas in times of sustaining an action, and tamas in the period of loss, confusion or inertia that follows the extinction of an active phase.  Sattwa and tamas will often appear to be very similar, as stillness and calmness is inherent in both qualities, but upon deeper investigation, we see that the quality of the calmness or stillness has a very different tone.  The stillness of sattwa has clarity and lightness, whereas the stillness of tamas is dull and inert, almost lifeless and heavy.

The three qualities express themselves in time as creation, preservation and destruction.  These qualities also correspond to the primal energetic deities of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva – again, respectively, creation, preservation and destruction, expressed through Prakriti, life force.  The cycle of connectivity that combines and entwines these three energies can be called the cycle of change, or time, as Prakriti or creation implies change and time both.  Neither can be considered in existence without the other.

Astrology: New Moon in Virgo 2020

Salvador Dali, ‘Virgo’, lithograph, 1967.

New Moon in Virgo today, the aspect was exact at 7:00 EDT, 12:00 UT, at 25º 01 Virgo. This last decanate of Virgo has Venus/Taurus energy, emphasizing the run-up to the Autumnal Equinox that we will experience on Tuesday September 22, as the Sun makes its ingress to Venus-ruled Libra. This is a gorgeous, earthy, practical, can-do energy, and a very stable and supportive chart bringing us into the coming month, as we all look to the season ahead to give some relief from the constrictions and chaos that this year has unleashed.

With six planets retrograde, energies are quite internalized, but so solidly encouraging that there is a sense of deep-seated devotion, wonder and inspiration here. As we enter this last quarter of 2020, people are finding whether or not the necessary adjustments they have made, resulting from forces beyond their control, have been effective or not, and everyone is keen to gain deeper understanding of where we are headed, how things will continue to change, and what may or may not return to a state of “normal” that closely resembles what we had to leave behind.

This year has asked us to stretch ourselves and reconfigure our psyches, making room for the whole world as something for consideration. The pressure that has been exerted from outside, reaching into our most personal and private spaces, has left many people feeling raw and overwrought. Continual, rolling calamity and catastrophe around the globe has everyone in fighting form, and it is natural that people are wary and fatigued. This season that we enter very strongly offers us the opportunity to consider what it is that we are fighting for, what are we devoted to, why and where do we find a sense of the sacred in our lives. Despite everything we now have the chance to feel infused with a powerful uplifting energy, and to find practical and effective solutions to the problems we face.

We can only go forward, and despite all appearances now is the time to know that we are protected, things will be okay – maybe different, but eventually alright. And there is the crux – we have all been required to fine-tune that sense of “alright”, and what that might mean to us as individuals. What do we need to make ourselves feel that the world is a safe place? What do we value, and how does this impact on our place in the world? These are the questions and insights that are floating about the ether at this time. Head and heart are working independently, but not at odds, with intellect acting as a beacon for our emotions, reaching out and showing the way to achieve positive forward motion. Now we must allow intuition and trust to guide us as we move forward into the end of this very trying year.

An interesting final note about this New Moon – after making aspect, we almost immediately entered void of course, at 7:42 EDT, 12:42 UT. The last aspect it made before exiting was a trine to Saturn, which is such a lovely, enriching, grounded energy, providing us with a beautiful day and evening ahead, as the Moon moves into Libra at 14:56 EDT, 19:56 UT.

I apologize to those who find that I am posting late about such events. I figure that if there are those of you who do Lunar work with exact aspects and times, you will be well prepared and do what you do. I am very trusting of Nature, and feel that her energy is not quite so stringent as to require exact times for our intent to manifest (if that is what we are aiming for). True intent is a powerful thing, and if you are very focused on achieving your goals, time is but a formality in the exertion and realization of will. Always have a care what you wish for, and trust that what is meant to be yours will come to you, eventually. There is no other way!

Thank you for reading, be well everyone ❤️
