The Sun moves through Leo each year from ~23 July – ~23 August, which in the Northern Hemisphere is the height of summer, and the world is filled with all the glory, beauty and bounty of the season. People take their vacations, soaking up the sun’s rays, basking in heat and leisure, allowing themselves to truly relax, and enjoy. For many, it is a most special time, the only time of year in which they take holidays. If you have ever watched lions at the zoo, on television, or on a safari or in the wild, the first thing that you may notice is how relaxed lions appear.  They are composure personified. They move gracefully, slowly honing in on their target, and then striking without so much as a ruffle. They are the picture of velvety fine perfection, with a deadly effective modus operandi. Leo is Fixed Fire, and like the lion, Leo is never in a rush, never displays anything other than the utmost dignity in personal presentation.  They know what they want, how to get it, and what is a waste of their time and to be avoided. You will never find a Leo ruffled, disheveled or otherwise compromised, for they simply would not allow such a situation to transpire.  No way will you ever see a Leo looking foolish, weak, belittled, or otherwise questionable. Ruled by the Sun, Leo is true nobility, taking for granted that they are the center of everyone’s solar system. They know that they bring the light, warmth and the power of growth, and they are proud of it. There is no such thing as insecurity or weakness in the Leo persona. Certainly, they may be familiar with such nonsense by observing the lives of others, but it is usually with a more than a bit of disdain that they witness such displays of ineptitude. The Sun-ruled Leo casts a long shadow indeed, the essential brightness of this sign defining confidence, composure and regality. The Sun has ever been a focal point of mankind’s awe and worship, and Leo understands why, as they realize that there is no greater power in our lives than the Sun, with its life-giving warmth and illuminating radiance. With such a resplendent benefactor, Leo cannot help but shine.

At their best, Leos are proud, benevolent, generous, inspiring, somewhat formal, casually regal, maybe a tad bit flashy, but always tastefully so, in that sort of “Oooh, I wish I had thought of doing that!” sort of way that often elicits jealousy from others. It’s not for everyone to be so stunningly confident, on point and successful all the time. Watch your Leo friends and take lessons, they can show you a thing or two about achievement, and even if life’s got them down, these people have the optimism and drive to push through, because defeat simply does not exist in their universe. They are also loyal, steadfast, constant, dependable, warm, and kind – but mostly because they would not dream of letting anyone down or being considered in anyway disappointing or less that perfect.  At their worst, Leo is egotistical, proud, pompous, mean-spirited, condescending, petty, brassy, shrill, bossy, inconsiderate, intolerant and patronizing. Leos are the type of people you go to when you want something done to maximum effect. They have an eye for how to “best” do something – so that it looks good, feels good, and basically succeeds. They have a great “shucks, I had no idea” act but they know exactly what they are doing. If they have a strong Virgo element in their charts, you may well receive a bit of perfection in your interaction with these folks.  Born leaders, they are gregarious and tend to bring out the best in others, only if through the kind of encouragement that comes from a healthy “catch me if you can” attitude.  So used to being the center of attention, Leos are not overly bothered by feeble attempts at detraction that occasionally come their way, because they know that any attention is good attention.

The Sun moves through the sign of Virgo each year from approximately August 23 – September 21, the final month of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. As the earth rejoices in the richness of early harvest, and preparations for the long winter ahead are still a consideration for tomorrow Mutable Earth wants nothing more but to experience the myriad permutations of this physical world. There are so many things to consider, digest, explore, analyze. So many facts to derive, so many positions, juxtapositions. All so very interesting! But wait, don’t get too familiar, because familiarity is a bit too…sticky. Virgo likes to keep things pure, simple, and somewhat at arms length. Many Virgos can be a bit retiring in overtly social situations (more or less depending on their Leo/Libra spread), because they tend to get a bit confused as to how to present themselves, always thinking of rules of decorum, order of communication, social protocol etc. Are they going to be boring, or should they just let themselves go this time? The Sun travels through Libra from ~23 September – ~23 October each year. Associated with the warm days of Autumn, the month of Libra is typically one of the more pleasant times of the year. Venus expresses herself in Libra as the paragon of refinement. Not one wrinkle, smudge or gaffe is permitted when Libra is in the house. Lights must be just so, flowers arranged exactly to best effect, food and wine perfectly paired, outfit showing off figure to maximum benefit, makeup perfectly applied, music pleasantly interesting, and the party filled with good friends and many laughs. Would that every day could be a party, a vivid discussion, a visit to the art gallery, an argument settled and peace restored. Cardinal Air loves nothing so much as to set things straight, ensure that balance and harmony reign, and that the angles are all correctly applied. Not that Libra doesn’t love a good fight, in fact, they often instigate conflict in order to control the restitution of peace. It just wouldn’t be fair, as everything has its merits, if you look hard enough, and justice requires that we do just that.  They may fully prefer white, but if you choose black, then they will argue black with you, because they love you, they can see your point, and well, it would be better if you both agree to the same thing, wouldn’t it? They love to love, and they take pride in seeing the good in all. They will be very thorough in sussing out all the possibilities in any situation, considering and talking through each question from a myriad of perspectives, discussing with anyone who will listen, and looking around for further input to add to the mix already at hand. 

Libra Tarot Correspondence – Major Arcana XI: Justice (Rider Waite Smith Tarot)

Libras present themselves gracefully, and you will rarely experience any instances of vulgarity, offensiveness or any sort of unpleasantness when dealing with a Libra.  They strive for peaceful circumstances, pleasant people and surroundings with which to occupy themselves. Discord or unpleasantness can make them physically and emotionally ill.  They will simply avoid people who upset them in any way, by being too loud, forward, rude or otherwise unpleasant. Often it is hard to understand exactly what has upset your Libra friends, and even they may have a hard time putting a finger on it, but they will simply know that something was “off”, and will avoid any repeat events until they figure out to their satisfaction how and why the situation can be remedied. Arguments can send them reeling for days, and recovery can occasionally require complete elimination of anything upsetting or bothersome. Arriving at a peaceful conclusion is the driving force behind their actions, and if they do not reason that peace can be achieved, they will move on to a more congenial circumstance. Life is short, why bother with misery? They are idealistic, and in their minds, a just world is a peaceful world, where all wrongs have been righted, all viewpoints are considered valid, and everyone’s thoughts are accorded with merit. How could anything less be fair? Libra can always be counted on to lift your spirits with their gentle loveliness, and when faced with a serious situation, even if the circumstances are life and death, they will always be able to choose the gentlest words, and the most just and equitable solution. As Libra can have trouble with being a bit too accommodating sometimes, it can be helpful for them to tap into their polarity sign, Aries. Aries can teach Libra that it’s just fine to stand up for yourself, put your foot down, make a firm decision and initiate action. People will still love you, even if you decide to take a stand on your own, and relationships will not crumble if you don’t always defer to the prevailing mood or opinion. The Sun passes through the astrological sign of Scorpio from ~ October 23 to ~ November 21. A heavy hitter in the zodiac, Scorpio is the embodiment of Fixed Water. Imagine a lake, deep and dark, its shore thick with brambles and deep swampy plants. You are out on the lake for an afternoon. Despite the fact that when you left it was a warm sunny day, somehow all you have experienced while out in your boat is heavy dark clouds and gloom. The hours pass, and perhaps you have been fishing, or napping, or having an argument with your companion, and you realize that it’s time to go. You search the shoreline for your point of entry, but you cannot find it, and a small panic begins to set into your heart, as it is getting late and you have things to do. You have become enchanted with the mood of this place, the deep rolling hills rising from the even deeper, murky waters. Your mood has been so intense, your focus so sustained that you have lost track of time and place, but you feel satisfied as the purpose of your visit was, in fact to hash out dark words and feelings. This is Scorpio, mystifying, brooding and insistent in its heaviness. You have no choice but to consider, to think, to wonder at the depths that surround you. This is familiar territory for Scorpio, though perhaps not so comfortable for others not familiar with these energies. Traditionally, rulership has been assigned to Mars, though modern astrologers choose Pluto as Scorpio’s ruler. In either case, the predominant energy is dense, occasionally aggressive, combative, and imposing; there is little lightheartedness in this company. There is, however, a fundamental need to control, to overcome, to determine and if necessary, to punish and eradicate any perceived error or malfeasance.

All this being said, it is true that Scorpio people get a bad rap. Indeed, they may be prone to dark moods, dramatic pronouncements, have an affinity for things heavy and serious, wince at superficiality and abhor trivialities and silliness, but these are the people you want to have around you when it actually does get serious in your life.  They won’t mince words and give you platitudes.  They won’t hold your hand and say “there, there”.  They will give you the straight goods, no holds barred, and you will be content with this, as it is honesty. The songwriter Billy Joel (himself, interestingly, a Taurus, the sign directly opposite Scorpio) once said, “Honesty is such a lonely word; everyone is so untrue”.  Honesty, and loneliness for that matter, are familiar territory for most Scorpios.  These people are very familiar with living life on the edge, looking down into the inescapable abyss that is life and death, even if those around them either prefer to ignore the abyss, or are simply ignorant that it even exists. Looking at things from a perspective that many people would have to try very hard and dig deep to access, Scorpio is comfortable with what is hard, dark, taboo and unspeakable, and typically, they laugh at it all.  Many people wouldn’t even dare to approach life in the way a Scorpio can – no-holds barred, full frontal, straight up and way down. It’s hard for people to understand this sort of approach, for while thrilling, it can also be exhausting, isolating and unpleasant to always look at the dark side of life. Just ask a Scorpio’s mate, partner or best friend how many times they have thrown their hands up in despair that their beloved Scorpio is always taking things too hard, too heavy, too personally.  But as darkness is explored, its intricacies realized and understood, the levity that results allows for an emotional and spiritual freedom that is rare. It takes a lot of effort, but the strength of character required to achieve that kind of perspective is stock in trade for most Scorpios.  Unfortunately though, as this is Fixed Water, if life has been harder than normal for a Scorpio, and indeed, many Scorpios are prone to make things a little harder than they need to be, a natural kink in the psyche, some twist in the spirit can develop, and a certain particular limping gait will be assumed throughout the lifetime, always obvious to those around, creating a nuance of danger and mystery around the Scorpio native. But if it weren’t for those twisted, gnarly trees in the forest, how would we ever know what it really means to be straight and true?

Scorpio’s polarity sign is Taurus, and Taurus can offer lessons in being grounded, seeking stability, in appreciating the beauty of the here and now, rather than always looking into the shadows for the bogeyman. Scorpio can benefit from the pure sensuality and reverence of beauty of Taurus, finding pleasure in the material simply for pleasure’s sake, letting go of any need to control, dominate or otherwise subdue. Sometimes you just need to have some good, simple enjoyment, Scorpio, so keep it in mind that when the darkness grows too deep, all you have to do is plant your feet on solid ground for a while to find some relief.
