In 2004, she completed Ashtanga Yoga teacher training with Ron Reid, Diane Bruni and Meenakshi Joy at Downward Dog Yoga Toronto and from 2008 - 2009 she had private Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta teacher training with Swami Nityamuktananda of Kerala. He was trained at the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy in Rishikesh, in the direct lineage of Swami Sivananda Saraswati and Swami Vishnudevananda. Veronica's formal astrology studies began in 1995, with Robin Armstrong (RASA School of Astrology) of Toronto.  She has also studied with the American Federation of Astrologers, has a certificate in Psychological Astrology from the London Centre for Psychological Astrology, and holds a Diploma in Psychological Astrology from CPA's offshoot, MISPA (Mercury Internet School of Psychological Astrology), run by the esteemed John Green. As a student and analysand of Jungian psychology, she is fascinated with the interconnections of spirit and culture, the power of symbolism and the impact of art and imagery on the process of human development.

The Sun travels through Libra from ~23 September – ~23 October each year. Associated with the warm days of Autumn, the month of Libra is typically one of the more pleasant times of the year. Venus expresses herself in Libra as the paragon of refinement. Not one wrinkle, smudge or gaffe is permitted when Libra is in the house. Lights must be just so, flowers arranged exactly to best effect, food and wine perfectly paired, outfit showing off figure to maximum benefit, makeup perfectly applied, music pleasantly interesting, and the party filled with good friends and many laughs. Would that every day could be a party, a vivid discussion, a visit to the art gallery, an argument settled and peace restored. Cardinal Air loves nothing so much as to set things straight, ensure that balance and harmony reign, and that the angles are all correctly applied. Not that Libra doesn’t love a good fight, in fact, they often instigate conflict in order to control the restitution of peace. They love to be peace brokers, having their hand on the scale, occasionally tipping it one way or the other just to ensure that they can maintain the position of leadership, arbiter, and final judge on any topic. As far as they are concerned, until they have had their say, the matter is not settled, nor is it even worthy of consideration unless they deem it worthy. They may be pleasant, but never be fooled into thinking that lovely Libra is anyone’s pushover.

She invited him over to dinner, and thinking he would please her, he wore one of the ties that evening, to show her how much he appreciated it. As he sat down at the table, his Libra mother looked at him and said – “Why are you wearing that tie?  You didn’t like the other one I bought you?”  Classic Libra.  Libra has a reputation for being indecisive, but it isn’t quite as simple as this. Libra people do tend to have a bit of trouble when it comes to making decisions, but it is mostly because they just don’t want to allow the thought that one thing could be better than anything else. It just wouldn’t be fair, as everything has its merits, if you look hard enough, and justice requires that we do just that.  They may fully prefer white, but if you choose black, then they will argue black with you, because they love you, they can see your point, and well, it would be better if you both agree to the same thing, wouldn’t it? They love to love, and they take pride in seeing the good in all. They will be very thorough in sussing out all the possibilities in any situation, considering and talking through each question from a myriad of perspectives, discussing with anyone who will listen, and looking around for further input to add to the mix already at hand. 

Libra Tarot Correspondence – Major Arcana XI: Justice (Rider Waite Smith Tarot)

Libras present themselves gracefully, and you will rarely experience any instances of vulgarity, offensiveness or any sort of unpleasantness when dealing with a Libra.  They strive for peaceful circumstances, pleasant people and surroundings with which to occupy themselves. Discord or unpleasantness can make them physically and emotionally ill.  They will simply avoid people who upset them in any way, by being too loud, forward, rude or otherwise unpleasant. Often it is hard to understand exactly what has upset your Libra friends, and even they may have a hard time putting a finger on it, but they will simply know that something was “off”, and will avoid any repeat events until they figure out to their satisfaction how and why the situation can be remedied. Arguments can send them reeling for days, and recovery can occasionally require complete elimination of anything upsetting or bothersome. Arriving at a peaceful conclusion is the driving force behind their actions, and if they do not reason that peace can be achieved, they will move on to a more congenial circumstance. Life is short, why bother with misery? They are idealistic, and in their minds, a just world is a peaceful world, where all wrongs have been righted, all viewpoints are considered valid, and everyone’s thoughts are accorded with merit. How could anything less be fair? Libra can always be counted on to lift your spirits with their gentle loveliness, and when faced with a serious situation, even if the circumstances are life and death, they will always be able to choose the gentlest words, and the most just and equitable solution. Always fair and kind, Libra is the natural peacemaker of the Zodiac, motivated to lead the way to harmony, restore beauty and nurture friendship with all.

As Libra can have trouble with being a bit too accommodating sometimes, it can be helpful for them to tap into their polarity sign, Aries. Aries can teach Libra that it’s just fine to stand up for yourself, put your foot down, make a firm decision and initiate action. People will still love you, even if you decide to take a stand on your own, and relationships will not crumble if you don’t always defer to the prevailing mood or opinion. The Sun passes through the astrological sign of Scorpio from ~ October 23 to ~ November 21. A heavy hitter in the zodiac, Scorpio is the embodiment of Fixed Water. Imagine a lake, deep and dark, its shore thick with brambles and deep swampy plants. You are out on the lake for an afternoon. Despite the fact that when you left it was a warm sunny day, somehow all you have experienced while out in your boat is heavy dark clouds and gloom. The hours pass, and perhaps you have been fishing, or napping, or having an argument with your companion, and you realize that it’s time to go. You search the shoreline for your point of entry, but you cannot find it, and a small panic begins to set into your heart, as it is getting late and you have things to do. You have become enchanted with the mood of this place, the deep rolling hills rising from the even deeper, murky waters. Your mood has been so intense, your focus so sustained that you have lost track of time and place, but you feel satisfied as the purpose of your visit was, in fact to hash out dark words and feelings. This is Scorpio, mystifying, brooding and insistent in its heaviness. You have no choice but to consider, to think, to wonder at the depths that surround you. This is familiar territory for Scorpio, though perhaps not so comfortable for others not familiar with these energies. Traditionally, rulership has been assigned to Mars, though modern astrologers choose Pluto as Scorpio’s ruler. In either case, the predominant energy is dense, occasionally aggressive, combative, and imposing; there is little lightheartedness in this company. There is, however, a fundamental need to control, to overcome, to determine and if necessary, to punish and eradicate any perceived error or malfeasance.

All this being said, it is true that Scorpio people get a bad rap. Indeed, they may be prone to dark moods, dramatic pronouncements, have an affinity for things heavy and serious, wince at superficiality and abhor trivialities and silliness, but these are the people you want to have around you when it actually does get serious in your life.  They won’t mince words and give you platitudes.  They won’t hold your hand and say “there, there”.  They will give you the straight goods, no holds barred, and you will be content with this, as it is honesty. The songwriter Billy Joel (himself, interestingly, a Taurus, the sign directly opposite Scorpio) once said, “Honesty is such a lonely word; everyone is so untrue”.  Honesty, and loneliness for that matter, are familiar territory for most Scorpios.  These people are very familiar with living life on the edge, looking down into the inescapable abyss that is life and death, even if those around them either prefer to ignore the abyss, or are simply ignorant that it even exists. Looking at things from a perspective that many people would have to try very hard and dig deep to access, Scorpio is comfortable with what is hard, dark, taboo and unspeakable, and typically, they laugh at it all.  Many people wouldn’t even dare to approach life in the way a Scorpio can – no-holds barred, full frontal, straight up and way down. It’s hard for people to understand this sort of approach, for while thrilling, it can also be exhausting, isolating and unpleasant to always look at the dark side of life. Just ask a Scorpio’s mate, partner or best friend how many times they have thrown their hands up in despair that their beloved Scorpio is always taking things too hard, too heavy, too personally.  But as darkness is explored, its intricacies realized and understood, the levity that results allows for an emotional and spiritual freedom that is rare. It takes a lot of effort, but the strength of character required to achieve that kind of perspective is stock in trade for most Scorpios.  Unfortunately though, as this is Fixed Water, if life has been harder than normal for a Scorpio, and indeed, many Scorpios are prone to make things a little harder than they need to be, a natural kink in the psyche, some twist in the spirit can develop, and a certain particular limping gait will be assumed throughout the lifetime, always obvious to those around, creating a nuance of danger and mystery around the Scorpio native. But if it weren’t for those twisted, gnarly trees in the forest, how would we ever know what it really means to be straight and true?

Scorpio’s polarity sign is Taurus, and Taurus can offer lessons in being grounded, seeking stability, in appreciating the beauty of the here and now, rather than always looking into the shadows for the bogeyman. Scorpio can benefit from the pure sensuality and reverence of beauty of Taurus, finding pleasure in the material simply for pleasure’s sake, letting go of any need to control, dominate or otherwise subdue. Sometimes you just need to have some good, simple enjoyment, Scorpio, so keep it in mind that when the darkness grows too deep, all you have to do is plant your feet on solid ground for a while to find some relief.

Imagine yourself rolling down an open highway in a fast convertible, top down, on a starry, cloudless night.  Nothing but the wind, the stars, and you. (Well, maybe a buddy if you are so inclined).  Feel the freedom, the rush of the open air, the blast of freshness and the sense of invincibility, of pure joy.  That’s Sagittarius energy, boundless, huge and high.  Sagittarians are the embodiment of Mutable Fire, like the fire of starlight, of the spark of inspiration, fleeting and sudden, changeable and inconstant. People have said that this is Fire at its coldest, but rather, it is Fire at its most potent. This is the Fire that Prometheus stole from Zeus to empower his creation, giving humanity a chance to crawl out of the mud of basic existence to a state of openness and inspiration, imbuing humankind with the potential to learn, grow, and soar in the realms of spirit and intellect.

The Sun moves into Sagittarius from approximately 23 November to 21 December, and in the Northern Hemisphere, this is late autumn. This is the time when students everywhere are in the rush and depths of their studies. Preparations are being made for the Christmas festivities of December 25, and the world is jovial and excited. People sing carols, the party season is in full swing, bonhomie and goodwill is shared among all. It is an inescapable energy, and the world gets caught up in it every year, eating, drinking and spending money to excess. These are the days of Jupiter, Sagittarius’ ruler, and if anything, an ostentatious party with the best food, drink and friends is the name of the game, a gathering where people can share themselves, reaching out with their philosophies, ideas for progress and furthering their lots, discussing pet projects, gossiping and giving to their favorite charities. Jupiter infuses Sagittarius with an unquenchable optimism and generosity, and you can always count on your Sagittarius friends to help when you really need it (if you can find them, that is!). It is easy for the Jupiter-ruled to understand your situation for they are broadminded, ever willing to lend a hand or share a laugh. At their best, Sagittarius is enthusiastic, fun-loving, loyal, optimistic, uplifting, encouraging, open-minded, philosophical, intellectual, flexible, positive, motivating, honest and true. At its worst, Sagittarius can be fickle, escapist, unmotivated, tactless, foolishly optimistic, careless, irresponsible, messy, inconsiderate, and prevaricating. Mutable Fire gives Sagittarius the essence of Air, inspiring and fanning the flames of spirit and development, but given that Mutability, there is a tendency to be inconstant and easily bored. Chances are, when you are looking for your Sagittarius friend or partner, they are off doing something of their choosing, freewheeling and fun, even if it’s a business meeting or an onerous task. The Sun moves through Capricorn from approximately 22 December to 20 January, and in the Northern Hemisphere, the ingress of the Sun into Capricorn coincides with Winter Solstice, the shortest day, and the darkest, longest night of the year. We are as far away from the warming light of the Sun as possible, and we must resign ourselves to the cold, dark stillness of winter. Many people associate winter with Death, and indeed to primitive folk, it was often a time of terror, with the bulk of the year spent in preparing for the possibly fatal circumstances that might arise in succumbing to the frigid darkness. Nature displays a chilly, unforgiving face in winter; there is little green to offer us relief, nothing soft or colored, other than perhaps the blood red of holly berry, and cardinals perched on dogwood stems. Nature is at rest, hibernating and reconvening energies for the eventual power and force of spring, and all activity is deep and hidden, as is much with Capricorn. These people are the embodiment of Cardinal Earth, best represented by the slow yet unstoppable evolution of mountains, islands springing from the seas, the rocky cliffs against which crash the ever-churning oceans, the bookends of earthly existence, responsible for outlining our sense of reality. Look at architecture, roadworks, canals and public edifices and you will see the face of Capricorn looking back at you, defining, sustaining and demarcating our sense of space and time. We take for granted how our sense of time is defined by the parameters of space, and yet, as humans, our days are spent going from here to there, from one place to the next. Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, Lord of Time and Matter is the one who defines our movements, ever-building and placing new landmarks for us to absorb into our consciousness, never ceasing. Capricorn is all about the things that stretch above and behind us, above and below, the unassuming, and often unacknowledged backdrops of our society, which we can never do without, and yet we completely take for granted until somehow these things are gone.

Capricorn is steady in the execution of power, for the Saturn-born always take a long view. Plans are meant to be achieved with care and patience, for only in approaching the world with thorough consideration we achieve long-lasting success. Capricorn does not like to redo, let alone undo any already completed work, and so will ensure that accuracy is fundamental to any endeavor. While all this sounds like our Capricorn friends are all business, no pleasure, this is not entirely true. Yes, perhaps they prefer to spend their time in pursuits that allow them improvement, as any expenditure of time is considered a luxury to Capricorn, and had better be a good investment, but who can blame them? These people understand the true preciousness of time, and the fact that our individual time here is cruelly limited. There will never be enough time to do everything that we want, not by a long shot, so Capricorn chooses carefully and wisely. At best, Capricorn is shrewd, dependable, responsible, methodical, ambitious, practical, loyal, disciplined, cautious, patient, humorous, and at worst, Capricorn is snobbish, pessimistic, cold, fearful, rigid, miserly, unfriendly, insecure, and cruel.

All this considered, it is an unfortunate thing, that as with the nature of ice, cold and immovable, so we often find Capricorn stuck and withholding. It is often difficult for these folks to really let go and enjoy themselves, as their inner judge never sleeps and is always watching the clock. They can spiral into complete constriction, never moving forward, stubbornly sustaining what they already have, for as well as ruling time, Saturn also rules want, fear and insecurity. To exist in such a place, governed by terror and unable to move forward is indeed a cold and lonely state, and Capricorn is no stranger to this feeling. Loneliness and isolation are regular bedfellows for these people, and they accept this fate rather stoically, as they understand that there is more to life than always having a good time. They prefer to be the ones who leave the party early, knowing there are a few hours left in the evening that could be devoted to working on achieving their accomplishments, but if you really need them to be your safe drive home, they will stay and patiently wait, watching you as you make a fool of yourself stumbling around drunk and ridiculous. Later, they will make you laugh so hard as they recount your buffoonery, you almost want to relive the experience just so you can have that attentive detail bestowed upon you again. And if you are in real trouble – serious life problems – or even if you are just feeling a bit confused about your direction, find your Capricorn friends. They will quickly and dispassionately delineate your situation, and arrive at the most practical and successful plan to get you out of trouble.
